CRA Canada Child Benefit (CCB) Reference Guide

Everything parents and legal guardians need to know about qualifying, payments, and maximizing benefits in 2026.

What is the Canada Child Benefit?

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to assist eligible families with the cost of raising children under the age of 18.

It is designed to target support to low- and middle-income Canadian families. It is recalculated every July based on the previous year's Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI).

  • Tax-Free Status: Payments are 100% tax-free and not reported as income.
  • Indexation: CCB limits and base amounts are indexed annually to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
  • Child Disability Supplement: Families with qualifying disabled children can receive an additional monthly Child Disability Benefit (CDB) tax credit.

Am I Eligible for the CCB?

To qualify for the Canada Child Benefit, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You must live with the child, and the child must be under 18 years of age.
  • You must be primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child.
  • You must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
  • You or your spouse/common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) calculated?
Your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) is your net income (line 23600 of the tax return) plus the net income of your spouse or common-law partner, minus any Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) or Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) income received. CRA uses the AFNI reported on your 2025 tax return to calculate payments for the benefit year starting July 2026.
Do I have to apply for provincial child benefits separately?
No. For all provinces except Quebec, the Canada Revenue Agency automatically registers you for provincial programs (like the Ontario Child Benefit or BC Family Benefit) when you apply for the federal Canada Child Benefit. In Quebec, you must file a separate application for the Quebec Family Allowance (Allocation Famille) directly with Retraite Québec.
What happens if my family situation changes mid-year?
You must notify the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) immediately if your marital status changes, you have a new child, a child no longer lives with you, or you move to a new province. CRA will recalculate your benefit starting the month after the change occurred. Mid-year changes in income do not immediately affect payments; your payments are adjusted only each July based on the previous year's tax return.
How does shared custody affect CCB payments?
If you share custody of a child equally, both eligible parents will receive exactly 50% of the CCB payment they would have received if they had sole custody. The CRA calculates each parent's 50% payment based on their own respective Adjusted Family Net Income.
